What are termites? Termites are small, social insects that belong to the family of cockroaches. They are known for their wood eating habits and play a significant role in the ecosystem by helping decompose dead wood and recycle nutrients back into the soil. Termites live in colonies that can range from a few hundred to millions of individuals, depending on the species. They are typically classified into three main castes, workers, soldiers and reproductives (kings and queens). Workers are responsible for foraging for food, caring for the young and maintaining the nest, while soldiers protect the colony from predators. The reproductive caste is responsible for producing new offspring.
There are several species of termites, and can be found in various habitats around the world. Some species are notorious for causing damage to wooden structures, furniture and crops leading to significant economic losses. Control methods often involve chemical treatments, baiting systems and preventative measures to protect buildings from infestations.
Common signs of termites are call mud tubes, termites often build mud tubes to travel between their nests and food sources. These tubes are typically found along walls, foundations or in crawl spaces. Wood damage that can be hollowed-out or sounds hollow when tapped on can indicate early activity. Look for visible signs of damage in wooden structures, furniture and flooring. Discarded wings is another true indication of presence. Swarmers or reproductive termites shed their wings after mating. Finding discarded wings near windows, doors or light fixtures can be a warning sign. This includes swarmers inside or outside your home, especially during spring or early summer.
Bubbling or peeling paint is a sign of moisture and termite activity as they create tunnels that lead to water damage. Look for soft doorjambs at exterior bottom of doors that are not protected and become misaligned or difficult to open or close. Don't let termites eat your deal.
